Philippines politics have long been smeared with bad mouths and black propaganda, and former politician Rafael Alunan III thinks that Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte has merely become victim of these old school tactics.

The media also, with their yellow journalism, is doing its part in spreading propaganda against Duterte. Alunan cited guilt by intrigue, name-dropping, and misrepresentation as the methods of ruining one’s reputation, some of which he became a victim of .

The former politician recalls having been propagandized as a jueteng protector who received kickbacks from the illegal activity so as to smear his reputation and make the President that time lose his trust on Alunan.

The same situation can be seen with Duterte as his reputation is being ruined by linking him to the illegal drug trade so his father, the President, would falter in his trust. Alunan asserts that the Dutertes would only cast their names along in the Customs scandal if, and only if, they were not concerned about their political future.

In his full post on Facebook, Alunan said,

"Guilt by intrigue? When I was in public service, I was victimized by intrigue as well, specifically, that I was a jueteng protector receiving kickbacks for it. It was meant to erode the President's trust in me and erode the President's political capital to satisfy selfish agendas. It didn't work because truth prevailed.

Another example is name-dropping and outright misrepresentation. It's rampant because people are gullible and amoral. It's indirect smearing and another form of character assassination. Word of mouth, blind items and blatant libel are typical.

Now, do I think that VM Paolo Duterte is being targeted to erode the President's political capital and his, and the people's trust in them? Well, considering that regime change proponents haven't stopped with their black propaganda and yellow journalism, that is entirely plausible. Unless VM Duterte doesn't care about his dad and his political future, I don't think he's doing what they say he is down at Customs.

Drug smuggling through our airport and seaport gateways has been going on for the longest time, way before PRRD took office one year ago. Ozamis, Polloc, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Iloilo, Batangas are some of the notorious bagsakans apart from domestic and international airports. He's now seeing the extent of the rot in government and his criminal justice system handicap in battling drugs, crime and corruption.

Pati kakampi kalaban.
