The Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP) currently sits as the Chair Party for Liberal International (LI) which is an organization of leaders and members that promote liberalism and liberal democracy, and strengthen liberal parties across the globe.

LI leaders in power are Lord Alderdice, President of the Liberal International, Member of the European Parliament Graham Watson, who is also ALDE leader; Dr. Wolfgang Gerhart, former leader of the German Liberal Party and current Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) Chair; former International Labor Organization (ILO) Chairman Chung Eui-yong, Dr. Yoo Jay Kun, parliament member of the ruling Uri Party of Korea; Malaysian Senator Dr. S. Vijayaratnam; Italian Member of the European Parliament Lappo Pistelli; and MP Sam Rainsy, leader of the Cambodian United Opposition and President of the Cambodian Sam Rainsy Party.

Back during former President Benigno Aquino III’s term, the LP was host to the largest LI gathering for the inauguration of their central office in Asia and the big Liberal groups present were the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). That time, Senator Franklin Drilon headed the LP.

Currently, Drilon is the chairman of CALD and columnist Carmen Pedrosa of The Philippine Star pointed out that it does not seem like a “coincidence” that the European parliament is severe with their attacks against President Rodrigo Duterte considering that one of his staunchest critics sits as an integral connection to the European parliament.

Drilon himself is plagued with issues in the national scene having been linked to the illegal drug trade by a cousin of Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, a narcopolitician tagged by Duterte.

The Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of Drilon also became controversial after an alleged overpriced construction of the Iloilo City Hall of Justice wherein Php 200 million was spent for an anomalous and poor infrastructure.

Pedrosa cited former Iloilo congressman Augusto Syjuco Jr. as having reported that Drilon continues to cover up the building’s flaws by spending Php 50 million for repairs using his PDAF.

When former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo deposed Drilon as LP president during her time, it prompted the senator to lead the Hyatt 10 group to oust Arroyo. Pedrosa opines that the US may have backed up the cause when they were threatened by Arroyo’s move to strengthen ties with China.

Drilon’s ties goes beyond just a national threat considering how he is pulling strings in the international scene. He has become an influential force against Duterte who is clamoring for genuine change in the country.
