Opposition tries to bring Duterte down but only shamed their selves

Home / Opinion / Opposition tries to bring Duterte down but only shamed their selves

President Rodrigo Duterte’s critics and dissenters may have tried to hatch a strategy to impeach or besmirch the President’s standing, but prolific writer Jose Alejandrino said their desire to bring him down only ensnared them in a trap.

Alejandrino advised the opposition to concede to the 2016 results and cooperate with Duterte, but their stubbornness drove them to their own downfall.

The first mistake the opposition made was to misinterpret the public’s support for Duterte. Even when 16 million voters had spoken, they refused to heed the numbers and misjudged the public’s preference for Duterte.

A popular president should not be messed with, as Alejandrino pointed out, because the solid backing of the country will only bring counterstrategies to dust. The more the opposition tries to ruin Duterte’s reputation, the more the public will support him thinking that the opposition has nothing better to do than bring their favorite man down.

Alejandrino also cited the opposition’s underestimation of a mere “provincial hick” as a president as one of their biggest mistakes. They thought that they can work around a hillbilly like Duterte, but their regional bias proved fatal as Duterte only outsmarted them with every move.

In his full article posted by netizen Butch Cabanban, Alejandrino said,

"THE MISTAKES OF A BRAINLESS OPPOSITION

by Jose Alejandrino

After the May 2016 elections, I advised the Opposition to cooperate with the president and not plot against and obstruct him. It chose not to listen because it thought Rodrigo Duterte would be a pushover who could be replaced by Leni Robredo.

I told myself, well, if they want to play games, we would show them how to play. Just give them enough rope to hang themselves. The president gave them the rope. Because of their own stupidity, they fell into their own trap. It was simply a matter of leading them to it. Because of lack of brains, they made one mistake after another.

Mistake No. 1: The Opposition misjudged the mood of the people. Duterte was elected on a platform of change. So long as he pursued that program and produced achievements his popularity would rise. That is what happened.

Mistake No. 2: The Opposition thought it was dealing with a stupid provincial hick. It underestimated Duterte who turned out to be much smarter than them.

Mistake No. 3: You don't go up against a popular president. You don't fight him on issues that are popular. Corruption, drugs, terrorism are popular issues not only at home but also abroad. When you attack Duterte on these issues, you merely increase and consolidate his popularity. When you plot to oust a popular president, public sympathy goes to him and you lose yours.

Mistake No. 4: Churning out fake news about the president is a double-edged sword. It cuts both ways because his supporters can do the same thing.

Mistake No. 5: The Opposition felt safe thinking it had the local mainstream media and the foreign media on its side. It forgot the social media which cannot be bought and has a much wider audience. The mainstream media lost its credibility with the public. The foreign media began to realize it was being used by the local Opposition to further a political agenda and that things in the Philippines were not what was being fed to them. If what the Opposition was saying was true, then why was Duterte so popular?

Mistake No. 6: The Opposition never anticipated Duterte would veer towards an independent foreign policy which would raise his international standing and open new doors for the Philippines. An independent foreign policy increased the leverage and options of Duterte.

Mistake No. 7: The Opposition did not anticipate the victory of Donald Trump. It was counting on the candidate of Loida Lewis to win the American presidential election. It lost the support of the White House when Trump won.

Mistake No. 8: The Opposition opposed martial law. By opposing, it was seen to be sympathetic to the terrorists and endangering the lives of our soldiers and police. It gave additional weight to arguments the president be given extraordinary powers to deal with extraordinary situations. It increased the revolutionary fervor in the country.

Mistake No. 9: The Opposition triggered a situation that would lead to its own demise, to an event that still has to be played out in the coming days.

See what happens when a brainless Opposition likes to play games that it doesn't know how to play?"

  1. they think their money can provide them leverage over a hillbilly leader from the province. what they forgot to notice is that Filipino's were feed up with their shenanigans of deceits , lies , corruption , proliferation of illegal drugs , political patriotism and monopoly of businesses by their oligarch allies. Filipino's are not dumb and we like to make changes for the betterment of our country and you people are the hindrance of achieving our aspiration for prosperity and peace. We believed PRRD gives us hope for prosperity, peace and unity among ordinary Filipino whose aspiration is the same as mine. now. stop all non sense,
contribute instead for the betterment of our nation and nothing more .

  2. I fully agree with Mr. Alejandrino. The president's popularity is not something that he earned overnight but rather earned out of hard-work and through the opposition's stupidity. How? Their front liners, like De Lima and Trillianes whose careers were stained with corruption and immorality are their worst choice. Trillianes because of his being short-brained personality is putting himself in shame rather than gaining popularity. De Lima who is living in the illusion that people still support her is a clear manifestation of a drugged person. Karma is real. Here comes another empty-headed Alejano who is spreading shame not only locally but internationally. The question is why did the opposition picked them? The answer is simple, they were treated like a pawn,a puppet, nothing to loose personality...

  6. This what will happen to "disente" group. They do not fully understand the way the poor and grass roots live or think. Their researchers and community organizer are likewise elitist so they banked heavily on the generalization of "political analysts" who were not immersed in the poorest of the poor community which, judging from my experience during immersion, were mostly inaccurate. Yes, they speak with authority but their knowledge are mostly culled from social science books of foreign authors with people in the academe as their samples and sources of data.Taking erroneous ideas from half baked researches will not lead anyone to accurate conclusion. This what happened to the opposition. The more they talk the more they destroy their credibility.

It looks like the administration is always steps ahead of them. Most if not all of the issues the opposition is throwing was laid by the administration for them follow and get waylaid in the trap hidden at the end of the trail. And I observed that they are very quick in biting the bait dangled by the president.

  7. Duterte is not power hungry how many times he said that if there is somebody better than him, he will willingly to give the presidency, BUT THERES NONE. Duterte is a real MAN who can accept FULL RESPONSIBILITY on his ACTIONS RIGHT OR WRONG. He don't want to blame others like the NAPENAS situation in SAF 44. How many people were victimize by the LAGLAG BALA. How many packages by the OFW were OPENED or stolen in previous president whose indifference attitude to Filipino people. Duterte has GUTS the only president who fight back to unscrupulous OLIGARCH and BIASED MEDIA like abs-cbn and INQUIRER. You cant put a good person down. I rather see dead criminals, than innocent people killed by criminals.

  8. Most of the Oppositions Facts are Faked which they can not back up. e.g. The drug of choice among addicts is Marijuana while Billlions and Billions of pesos worth of Shabu were confiscated, Many Drug labs were apprehended, Addicts caught commiting crimes were mostly high on Shabu if not all of them,
Addicts who surrendered confess of using Shabu and etc.. Where is Marijuana? That make them unreliable.

  9. Yeah, I am a Canadian who is married to a Filipino, I have been to the PPs on several occasions, and I have learned to love the country and its people. I am so happy for them to have elected such a great man for their president! Mr. Duterty is an honorable man, who cares very deeply for his country and its people. These opposition people are very stupid and out of touch with the problems of the PPs, shame on them for caring so very little for their country and its people. I admire President Duterty so very much, I wish he was prime minister of our country. The opposition were so stupid to think of him as a hillbilly hick, he has more brains than all of these opposition members combined. To state that Marijuana is the most widely used drug in the PPs, can tell you just how very little they know of what is happening in their own country, they must be all idiots to think they could convince the people of the world this! As for the UN speaking up against President Duterty, I have to say this, you could combine the brains of these guys and still end up with a very stupid stupid, hell if you combined the total brain power in the UN with the total brain power of the opposition members in the PPs, you would still end up with someone with only an IQ score of about 30% hahaha.

  11. Mr. Alejandrino is correct about his analysis and I totally agree that there's nobody better than our present president.

  12. i agree with this analysis but the title seems funny..Shouldn't it be themselves rather than their selves?

  13. I do also agree to Mr. Alejandrino. At first, I'm not a fan of PD30... but now, seeing his 1st year as president and how he face all his dis-tractor and trials, and how true he is to his word... I SALUTE PD30! This Opposition in whatever they are doing and about to do, they only UNMASKED their true-selves! They want us to think that they are patriotic and humanitarian, saying that what they think how a leader should be... PATHETIC! To Opposition... Who are you to claim that you only think and care about our nation and its people? If its true... there are so many ways to prove that (e.g. SHARE YOUR WEALTH!), Instead, YOU the Opposition chose the other way, thinking and doing how to impeach PD30... You had your CHANCE... Now there is someone doing the right thing and doing what a President MUST DO. PLEASE STOP! You are putting your selves to SHAME. And, to think You have NO DECENCY to the CHOICE/RIGHTS of the Majority of Filipinos who voted and now supporting PD30. Please concede and stop being pathetic. P.S. I voted for VP Binay last election.
