Sister of the late Senator Miriam Santiago expressed deep dismay at Mocha Uson’s appointment as the Presidential Communications and Operations Officer Assistant Secretary, emphasizing that it is a ministerial position that needs “highly educated, intelligent, and [experienced]” people to fit the post.

“I was Assistant Secretary of the DENR before and served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Senate before that. Prior to becoming Asst. Sec. of the DENR, I also headed the Legal Department of 13 companies based in the PH and US. All of us Asecs were highly educated, intelligent, and had long years of experience. We took our positions very seriously,” Paula Defensor-Knack said.

“I am NOT in favor of Mocha Uson being given a position as high as Assistant Secretary. There are other jobs she can fill in government,” she added.

Knack pointed out that certain protocols are laid out for ministerial positions such as the one Uson is appointed to. Knack stressed that it takes a highly educated person with stature to qualify for such post especially since it is a high-level rank looked upon by international bodies.

As the PCOO Assistant Secretary, Knack explained that one has to defend the president, and “defending the President is not a joke, it is not comedy, it is a very serious affair especially in foreign relations. It is NOT an easy task for us to defend the government back home, when appointments to high positions are taken lightly.”

Knack predicted that the Philippines might have to, instead of solely defending the President, also defend Uson’s “statements, videos, and past experience before foreign diplomats” which could have been avoided if the post was “given to more qualified people with far better credentials”.

In her last few sentences, Knack emphasized that the “Office of the President is not a student council” and if the Philippines want to avoid the same “student council” type of government the yellows ran before, they have to have people who “command the highest respect.”

In her full post on Facebook, Knack said,

"POINT OF ORDER ! LETS BE SERIOUS WITH GOVT. APPOINTMENTS. My sister Sen. Miriam would be furious with Mocha Uson being given a ministerial position as Asst. Secretary.

I was Assistant Secretary of the DENR before and served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Senate before that. Prior to becoming Asst. Sec. of the DENR, I also headed the Legal Department of 13 companies based in the PH and US. All of us Asecs were highly educated, intelligent, and had long years of experience. We took our positions very seriously.

I am NOT in favor of Mocha Uson being given a position as high as Assistant Secretary. There are other jobs she can fill in government.

The Assistant Secretary is considered a ministerial position in high-level meetings, including UN summits. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO ARE HIGHLY EDUCATED AND POSSESS STATURE. There are protocols for ministerial positions during international events. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Defending the President is not a joke, it is not comedy, it is a very serious affair especially in foreign relations. It is NOT an easy task for us to defend the government back home, when appointments to high positions are taken lightly. So now we have to defend Mocha Usons statements, videos, and past experience before foreign diplomats ? GET A BRAIN ! Everything is being scrutinized right now.

I do not personally know her, but it should be given to more qualified people with far better credentials because the times and the issues call for people with stature who can speak for the President and gain respect in international fora and media. The Office of the President is not a student council. That was the criticism of yellows and now it is being filled by anyone close to the President. That is not proper.

People associated with the President should command the highest respect. We do not want a circus around the President. DO NOT COPY THE STUDENT COUNCIL OF YELLOWS.

This makes the Office of the President a joke. This is not easy to defend abroad."

  1. Ms Knack don't pre-judge the poor lady yet let her do what she can do first, then let's see her performance. She is not given an assignment yet, it depends from her boss Andanar what job he will give to the poor woman. I also believed Mr. Andanar will give her a simple assignment at first, she will be guided properly & the Good Lord will help her also. Just like you, you were a beginner before learning the ropes you know? We the people don't care what educational background she has as long as she can honestly performed well. We believed in her capability because she is bright& articulate as tatay Digong says. Ms. Knack don't be a hambug individual, pls. be humble but full of wisdom & knowledge. Pls. give chance to others who are trying to do good. We believed she can do it. Thanks for your good advice & may God bless you more.

  2. I very much agree with you Noel. I used to like her but after her criticisms for Mocha I seem to lose my admiration for her. We were all starters and learners in some point of our working life, grateful to those people who took us on, believed and mentored us. I believe that academic knowledge and experience is different from actual work experience. Diplomas and certificates can't match actual performance. So let's not assume too much that just because Mocha does not possess the desired qualifications for the position, she's not capable of doing a great job. The President has shown faith in her and so should we. We'll wait and see what she can deliver. If the job is beyond her capacity, she can always quit. It won't be the end of the world.
