Armed Forces Chief Gen. Eduardo Año confirmed on April 29, 2017 (Saturday) that government forces were able to take down another Abu Sayyaf leader in the person of Alhabsy Misaya who was responsible for the attacks on foreign vessels and abductions of foreign crewmen in the sea borders of Mindanao and Malaysia.
Misayas was caught and killed in Indanan town in Sulu late into April 28, 2017 (Friday) with the Philippine Marines and intensified operations against Abu Sayyaf as the reason behind the government’s success.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with government forces in their counterinsurgency operations.
“We call on all citizens to remain vigilant, alert and watchful in cooperating with security forces to end the menace of this bandit group as government holds them accountable for their brutal and senseless crimes,” Abella said.
A different report arises from Octavio Dinampo, a university professor, where he claims that Misaya was actually killed by members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Indanan and Misaya’s cadaver was turned over to the government so they can take credit for the Abu Sayyaf’s leader’s death.
Año denies these reports and asserts that it was the Marines that took Misaya down.
Misaya was a renowned bomb expert and the person behind the October 2002 bombing in Barangay Malagutay here which killed US serviceman Sergeant Mark Jackson Mark and wounded another US serviceman and 22 others.
