Fellow LP says VP Robredo’s dissent against Duterte caused her low ratings
The latest SWS Survey revealed that Vice President Leni Robredo received the lowest dip among the top government officials with her December 2016 standing of +37 “good” falling by 11 points where it is now a +26 “moderate”.
Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat of the Liberal Party (LP) said that Robredo’s “crusade to speak the truth”, which counts as her dissenting opinions against President Rodrigo Duterte, has resulted to lesser net satisfaction ratings among the citizens.
“That’s the consequence, kasi if you’re in a very difficult crusade to tell the truth, ganiyan talaga ‘yung magiging consequence niya, especially na bilang head of opposition to a very popular government, meron talagang implications ‘yung mga positions niya,” Baguilat said.
Robredo has headlined as one of the most vocal critics of Duterte. She was particularly controversial for uploading a video message to UN where she claimed there was a palit-ulo scheme in police operations and other criticisms on the illegal drug war of the President.
“Since umalis siya sa Duterte Cabinet, parang nasa isang krusada siya na siya ‘yung namumuno sa opposition, and definitely it requires taking certain difficult positions on controversial issues… so sa kaniya right now, ang kaniyang mindset is to speak the truth. And sometimes sa mga kababayan natin, medyo siguro hindi magandang pakinggan ‘yung katotohanan,” Baguilat said.
The Ifugao representative even added that since she left her position as Housing secretary, citizens find it difficult to measure her performance besides her suitability to be a “spare tire”.
“Iba kasi kung meron kang programa na hinahawakan wherein the people can judge you whether you’re performing well or not. Sa ngayon, medyo hindi alam siguro ng taumbayan kung ano ‘yung pinakatungkulin na ngayon ng bise presidente except sa pagiging spare tire,” Baguilat explained.
Quezon City Representative Jose Christopher “Kit” Belmonte, on the other hand, blamed Robredo’s low ratings on an “organized” effort to stain her image and reputation, possibly referring to the media hype and impeachment raps against the Vice President especially after her video message to UN.
Baguilat suggested that the Vice President should discern what messages to relay to the people in order to address the “downward trend” in her ratings.
“It’s probably also ‘yung challenge sa team ng communications team ni Bise Presidente, to come up with messages para maipaliwanag sa taumbayan kung ano ‘yung kaniyang role na ngayon sa ating lipunan at sa ating pamahalaan,” Baguilat added.
The LP, on the other hand, should help relay Robredo’s message to people so as to enlighten a bigger part of the public.
“What we do is hinihintay namin kung meron bang mga messages o mga core messages na galing sa Vice President, which we as Liberals can also cascade down to our constituents,” Baguilat said.
