UP Professor says int’l orgs will interfere with Phils whether Duterte likes it or not
University of the Philippines sociology professor said in his column in Philippine Daily Inquirer that President Rodrigo Duterte cannot have the international community leave the Philippines alone.
Professor Randy David explained that the international organizations will always be involved in the state of affairs of other countries because the world has expanded into one big society.
“No government, no matter how popular, can command the rest of the world to ‘leave us alone’ and expect to be taken seriously,” David said.
The purpose of international intervention is also to allow countries to have some “self-observation” over its policies and dynamics, thus serve as guide for a government to inspect itself.
“Unlike citizens that must often wait for elections to make their opinions matter, global players can act almost immediately and with equally costly consequences,” David said when explaining the difference between opinion of global communities versus that of local citizens.
“They [international communities] can put their money into a country’s stocks in expectation of long-term growth and stability, or withdraw capital at the first sign of political uncertainty,” David added to explain how global intervention helps balance the dynamics in a country.
