PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Dionardo Carlos said that the prison cell was chosen for the senator on the grounds that it seemed “"best for her security and safety."
De Lima's lawyer, Alexander Padilla, reported that the senator’s prison cell is, “"Okay naman, disente naman. Noong umalis ako, kumakain na siya kasama ng staff niya. Hanggang mamayang gabi sila roon.”
Before her arrest, De Lima personally checked her prison room for security reasons, even asking prayers that she would be safe in police custody unlike the unfortunate cases of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr and South Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo.
In addition, a female police officer is assigned to the senator and she is allowed to keep her books in prsion.
"Hindi na ho bago ang pamamaraang ito (This arrangement is not new). This has been done in the past, and it can be done again, basta (for as long as) it's properly coordinated," Carlos said.
