Pimentel: CIA and AFP may be behind creation of Sayyaf
Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel said that 'bits of information' reach his office claiming that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) supported the creation of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

Year 1990s, Pimentel said that CIA recruited members for the Abu Sayyaf group and were trained in Sulu and Tawi-tawi by an elite Philippine military unit.
"Piecing bits of information together makes out a case, at least pro tanto, that the Abu Sayyaf might indeed be a creation of the CIA and had been covertly supported by select military officers during the administration of President Fidel Ramos," Pimentel said.
Pimentel also said that for unknown reason, CIA funding for the Abu Sayyaf was later cut-off.
According to Pimentel, Tte funding of CIA to Abu Sayyaf was later cut-off due to unknown reason causing the group to resort to banditry, kidnapping and other crimes.

"Parenthetically, there is a new book, Browback by Chaimers Johnson that may justify a deeper study into the affairs of the CIA in our country that have a direct relevance to the problems that the Abu Sayyaf is causing us today," Pimentel said.
Pimentel said that if the senate will conduct an investigation, they will ask former President Fidel Ramos and top military officials to testify.
