Duterte said if Federalism works: I will resign to give way to a new president
During the launch of the Comprehensive Reform and Development Agenda for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and other Conflict Areas in Regions IX, X, and XII, President Rodrigo Duterte said that he will resign 3 years from now if the federalism in the Philippines is already finished.
"Pag natapos 'yan nang 3 taon, asahan ninyo, I give you my word, 'pag nandiyan na 'yang framework, I will resign to give way to a new president. Wala na kayong iisipin pa." Duterte said.
"Basta ako sana mismo ang magsabi, alis na ako. Hindi ako maghintay ng 6 years. Just hurry up the process," Duterte added.
However, one of the framers of the 1987 Constitution, lawyer Christian Monsod said shifting to federalism is not necessary.
“Is the shift to federalism timely, relevant and necessary? My answer is no.” Monsod said.
“Everyday concerns” of ordinary people — such as criminality, corruption, illegal drugs, and the traffic problem — can be addressed with the powers of the present unitary form of government under the present Constitution," Monsod added.
"This is dangerous demagoguery. Is federalism also a Trojan horse for other agenda? It is time for us to think more deeply about our future."
