Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay: Do not interfere
According to Inquirer, The Philippines’ foreign secretary Perfecto Yasay on Saturday, September 24, pushed back against criticism of President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war, telling the United Nations not to interfere.
“We urge everyone to allow us to deal with out domestic challenges in order to achieve our national goals, without undue interference,” Yasay told the UN General Assembly.
International alarm has been growing because of the rising death from President Duterte's campaign against illegal drugs, with human rights saying they are engaging in extrajudicial killings.
During the presidential elections, Duterte vowed to eradicate the illegal drug trade in 3-6 minths and said that 100,000 criminals would be killed in the war.
“We have not and we will never empower our law enforcement agents to shoot-to-kill individuals suspected of drug crimes,” Yasay said.
“Extrajudicial killings have no place in our society, and in our criminal justice system.” he added.
Yasay said that President Duterte gain a 92% approval rating at home for his campaign against illegal drugs and was just misundertood.
Our actions, however, have grabbed both the national headlines and international attention for all the wrong reasons," Yasay said.
